Spotlight on Commissioners
Andrea Miller

NCIA Southern Panhandle Commissioner
Nebraska Humanities Council's Prime Time Family Reading Time Program
Nov. 6-Dec. 11, on Sunday afternoons, at the Lakota Lutheran Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska the first American Indian Prime Time Reading Program was piloted. NCIA Commissioner Andrea Miller led discussions along with storyteller Teri Ramirez. They shared with families the benefits and pleasures of reading and discussing storybooks, while younger siblings participated in age-appropriate pre-reading activities in another room. Families also learned about library resources and services. The last session, Dec. 11, was at the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library. Selected books, a mixture of American Indian stories and stories from other cultures, helped families discuss values such as humility, equality, bravery, honesty, trust, generosity, fortitude, and wisdom.
